History

Released in 1977, the Atari 2600 became an icon through its joystick and extensive cartridge library. Its unusually long life spanned several hardware generations.

Design, launch and legacy

An architecture built around cartridges

Atari designed the Video Computer System as flexible hardware rather than one built-in game. The MOS 6507 works with the TIA video and sound chip, while only 128 bytes of RAM force programs to follow the television signal. Warner funded completion after acquiring Atari in 1976. The console launched in 1977 with nine games.

Arcade games enter the living room

Sales grew until Space Invaders changed the market in 1980 and proved an arcade hit could sell a console. Asteroids, Adventure, Pitfall! and hundreds of cartridges followed. Technical openness enabled independent publishers, but limited quality control also produced an uneven library before the 1983 crash.

Exceptional longevity

Renamed Atari 2600 in 1982, the system passed through several case designs and remained on sale into the early 1990s. Atari reports nearly thirty million units. Its constraints created unusual programming techniques and still attract homebrew developers. The one-button joystick and cartridges remain early home-gaming icons.
