Instead of the fully 3D dogfights seen on consoles, the game places players above the battlefield as they pilot modern fighter aircraft, lock onto enemy jets, destroy ground targets, dodge incoming missiles, and complete a variety of mission objectives. Its controls and presentation are more straightforward than the mainline Ace Combat games, but it still retains familiar elements such as missile combat, different aircraft, mission briefings, and fast-paced military action. While it is quite different from the traditional Ace Combat experience, Ace Combat Advance remains an interesting portable interpretation of the series and a curious entry for GBA and aviation game fans.
