Hudson's Adventure Island IV (known also as Master Takahashi's Adventure Island IV or in Japan as 'Takahashi Meijin no Bōken Jima IV') is a 1994 platform game released by Hudson Soft for the Family Computer; it was the final game released for the console in Japan. Adventure Island IV (NES) The game was never released outside of Japan. Unlike previous entries in the Adventure Island series, Bōken Jima IV plays less like a linear platformer and more like an action/adventure platformer, similar to the later Wonder Boy games. Adventure Island IV also has a unique password system that the earlier games in the series did not have. It also features an egg item that allows the player character to teleport to the pedestal where the player puts it. There is a large variety of weapons to choose from which are unlocked by the player throughout the game. Many special items can be won in races and challenges, such as an angel/fairy item that allows the player character to re-spawn once, at the spot where they lost all hearts and even a compass that acts like a map showing the player with an arrow where to go. Whereas in the earlier Adventure Island games the player character had a food meter and when it runs out, the player lost a life, in Adventure Island IV, the player simply collects 8 food items to regain 1 heart as health. The evil Eggplant Wizard appears and kidnaps Master Higgins' dinosaur friends and later his girlfriend Tina, Master Higgins starts an adventure to save them and stop the evil eggplant once and for all. Master Higgins navigates the game world by moving forwards and backwards, as well as jumping. He can interact with elements in the environment, such as by climbing trees and entering doors. He also uses a wide variety of items to interact with the world. Some of these items are used as weapons, such as boomerangs and spears while others, such as the water gun, are used to solve puzzles and progress through the game. Items can also assist with exploration- for example, a compass that lets you see your location in a 3D map. Adventure Island IV features various boss enemies. Defeating them allows the player to rescue one of the kidnapped dinosaurs and open paths to traverse to new areas. The game has players explore areas with a complex map connecting areas with no explicitly separated stages. The game features a life gauge, which allows Master Higgins to take more than one hit from an enemy. Master Higgins collects fruits, hearts, and faeries scattered throughout the game. After collecting a certain amount of fruit, it will restore part of his life gauge. The life gauge can also be expanded by collecting two fragments of a heart container.
