Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom for the NES is the third classic Ryu Hayabusa adventure, and it continues the series’ fast action-platforming style with a darker sci-fi twist. This time, Ryu is pulled into a mysterious conspiracy involving Irene Lew, strange bio-weapons, and an ancient warship, giving the game a slightly different feel from the first two entries. The familiar wall-climbing, sword attacks, ninja arts, and cinematic cutscenes are still here, but the game is also known for being extremely difficult, especially in its North American version, where limited continues made the challenge even harsher. While it may not be remembered as fondly as the first two Ninja Gaiden games, The Ancient Ship of Doom still has impressive NES visuals, dramatic storytelling, and that sharp, intense gameplay style that made the trilogy stand out.
